Military spouses know that navigating the challenges that military life brings is no easy task. It may not seem fair that you function as both Mom and Dad while your spouse is deployed and it is often up to you to manage move after move as the military dictates where you will be spending your life. On top of all of this, you may be facing the stressful challenge of seeking employment. To help lighten the load and make the job-searching process a bit easier, here are the truths behind four myths pertaining to military spouses and the dreaded job search.
Myth: Although organizations exist to help military spouses, they don’t understand what it is like to be a military spouse.
Truth: While you may feel that companies simply don’t “get it,” you’re not alone in your position as a military spouse looking for employment. The Military Spouse Foundation is an organization that was founded by military spouses and offers a wide variety of resources to help you with your job search. They give you access to an entrepreneurial training center and online career planning that allows you to begin a career search or even completely change industries
Myth: Open positions can only be found online.
Truth: You can often find a great opportunity at job fairs or networking events as companies are now using a variety of outlets to try to fill their open positions. These methods can provide a valuable way to get your name and resume in front of an employer. If you aren’t sure whether the company is hiring, try sending a resume and cover letter that explain why they should hire you anyways. This will show them that you are passionate about the position and could be a great asset to the company.
Myth: As a military spouse, it is my job to take care of the household or work a steady job, although I really want to run my own business.
Truth: You can be a supportive spouse and own your own business at the same time! Programs such as the Military Spouse Business Association were created to give advice on starting and maintaining businesses, and many offer a location where military spouse business owners can meet to buy and sell from each other.
Myth: Applying for jobs can be time-consuming, stressful and difficult.
Truth: While this may have been the case decades ago, businesses today understand that you lead a busy life and your time is valuable. While some companies request that you mail your application in the old-fashioned way, most are more tech-savvy and allow you to submit your information electronically. In fact, a growing number of companies have started to use mobile recruiting platforms, like JIBE that allow applicants to upload materials directly from their smartphone.
